Shipped in v2.4.0

Automatic and safer free-up, optional upload compression, a seamless grid, and a much broader hide, plus frame-by-frame video scrubbing and steadier large libraries. GitHub Releases.

• Free up space automatically on a schedule, and on launch too; downloads and restored photos are always kept
• Freeing up space now uses the system trash, so a freed photo stays recoverable
• Optionally compress photos and videos before upload, at a quality you choose, with your on-device copy left full quality
• An edge-to-edge, seamless grid option that drops the tile rounding and side padding, still split by day
• Hide anything, including whole cloud albums, and lock it behind the Hidden screen, for device, synced and cloud photos alike
• Scrub a video frame by frame with a filmstrip, and smoother high-resolution previews
• See which albums already hold a photo you picked, and filter the picker to photos not in any album yet
• A screenshot quick-actions overlay you can enable in Settings
• Undo anywhere you delete or hide a photo
• Metadata removal now covers HEIC and other formats, and downloads keep their date and location on more phones
• An adaptive launcher icon, and a swipeable What's-new screen
• Steadier reinstall pairing, and steadier very large libraries

• Keep cloud photos available offline, with a badge, a Search entry and a storage readout
• An activity view from the Sync card for uploads, downloads and offline saves, with a history
• Motion photos play again, including HDR motion photos
• A modern album layout with a parallax cover, and the cover updates right away after you change it
• Reorganised settings with a permissions overview, metadata under Sync, and per-folder back up and album mirror checkboxes
• Unhiding a photo returns it to its original album or folder, with its original date
• Add a photo to an album straight from the photo view, with every album listed and a create-new option
• Much faster photo and video uploads
• Select all in multi-select, and one shared selection bar across the timeline, albums and folders

Shipped in v2.3.8

A batch of indexing, timeline, album and video improvements. GitHub Releases.

• Improved stability on very large libraries
• More resilient cloud sync
• Fewer duplicate uploads
• Faster downloads for large albums
• Add photos to an album from inside the album
• Pinch to zoom on videos

• Clearer cloud-status wording and focused timeline settings
• Four more languages: Polish, Slovak, Slovenian, Czech
• Smoother photo selection and swiping, with reliability fixes across albums, folders, and videos

Shipped

Shipped in v2.3.7

A small update. GitHub Releases.

• Large library indexing improvements
• A small UI fix

Shipped

Shipped in v2.3.6

A small reliability patch for backups. GitHub Releases.

• Back up only on Wi-Fi now holds on every backup path, and it counts any Wi-Fi connection including a metered hotspot, so backups no longer stall on a Wi-Fi marked as metered
• After a reinstall, photos already in your Proton cloud are recognised before the backup queue runs, so they show as backed up instead of being uploaded again
• The Sync screen now shows when a backup is waiting for Wi-Fi or preparing the first sync

Shipped in v2.3.5

A photo map, mirror-to-local backups, RAW photo support, and a reworked calendar and details sheet. GitHub Releases.

• A photo map you can open from Search: your located photos, both on-device and on Drive, plotted as thumbnail pins on dark map tiles, with offline place names
• Tap a place on the map to open it, search for a city, and save a spot straight to a new album
• Mirror to local (opt-in): the metadata you strip on upload is also applied to your on-device copy, so your local copy reflects the same changes
• RAW photos like DNG now get a thumbnail and a full preview, in the app and on the web
• A reworked details sheet, the same for photos, videos and Drive files, with the place name in the overview and resolution and length for videos
• A reworked calendar: one continuous view that snaps month by month, a search that jumps you to a month, year or description, and a day view that opens as a full-bleed album grid
• Type badges on your on-device photos in the timeline, so live, motion, video, RAW and panorama shots are easy to spot
• Drag to select many at once now works in shared albums and the hidden vault too
• Backups run quietly in the background, the always-on backup notification is off by default
• Videos rejoin Synced more reliably after a reinstall
• Vertical videos play the right way up on the web, and clips that can't be played are clearly flagged
• The cloud-album filter can exclude everything and then add folders back one by one, and the device-folder list stays visible even when every folder is hidden
• The gallery header and navigation stay reachable when the library is empty, and the photo grid no longer jumps when you enter selection mode
• Clearer save and sync progress, the in-app update check runs on its own, and a background-restart backup crash is fixed

Shipped

Shipped in v2.3.4

Drag-to-select everywhere, a steadier quick-scroll handle, and album loading fixed for shared-storage accounts. GitHub Releases.

• Drag to select many photos at once now works inside albums and device folders too, not just the main timeline
• The timeline's quick-scroll handle is grab-only now, so scrolling near the right edge no longer jumps you to another spot
• Albums load correctly on organisation accounts

Shipped

Shipped in v2.3.3

Faster, smoother browsing for large libraries, plus drag-to-select and a grid layout you can set. GitHub Releases.

• Drag across the timeline to select many photos at once
• A grid layout setting: choose how many photos per row, or have the timeline remember your last zoom
• Large libraries keep loading their older photos on their own instead of stopping partway
• Smoother first open in the photo viewer

Shipped

Shipped in v2.3.2

A small fix-up to the backup controls and the album layout. GitHub Releases.

• Turning off backup for a specific folder now stops it right away
• A photo you backed up shows in your timeline even when its folder is hidden, without bringing the rest of that folder back
• A quick confirmation before backing up selected photos, so nothing uploads by accident
• Album and device-folder photos now match the timeline's size and spacing

Shipped

Shipped in v2.3.1

A focused fix-up: tighter matching between your device photos and their Drive copies, plus in-place renaming for files from other apps. GitHub Releases.

• Device photos are matched to their Drive copy by content, not just filename, so a backup made under a different name still pairs up
• Renaming a photo on your device now works for files created by other apps, like your camera

Shipped

Shipped in v2.3.0

A features-and-polish release: a new Collection of memories, sharing a single photo by link, more search filters, and an app-wide visual refresh. GitHub Releases.

• A new Collection on the Albums page gathers your photos into memories, "On this day" a year, two, five and ten years back, plus seasonal sets like "Summer 2023"
• Share a single photo or video by public link, copy the link, set a password, and revoke it whenever you want
• Search by name, file type, sync state and date, with accent-insensitive matching
• An app-wide visual refresh: one clean typeface throughout, and tidier, more consistent buttons and screens
• Improved performance on large libraries
• A thumbnail strip in the viewer to scroll through and jump between photos

Shipped

Shipped in v2.2.0

Built around the folders on your phone and sharing, with a more reliable sign-in and smoother background loading. GitHub Releases.

• Sign-in no longer loops back to the password screen. The human-verification step now loads properly, so verification and 2FA go through
• Your phone's folders (Camera, Screenshots, and the rest) now show up, each on its own page. Back up a whole folder or hand-pick photos, and choose which folders appear on your timeline
• Share photos and videos to any other app, from the gallery, an album or a folder
• Shared albums open instantly from your cache, and large ones load much faster
• Thumbnails load in the background, so scrolling stays smooth
• Uploads keep running in the background after you leave the screen

Shipped

Shipped in v2.1.1

A performance and stability release focused on the very first sign-in. Large cloud libraries now load reliably, photos and thumbnails appear sooner, and clearing the cache rebuilds previews on the spot. GitHub Releases.

• First sign-in on a large cloud library loads reliably without crashing, even with thousands of photos
• Photos start loading during sign-in, so the first screen is populated sooner
• Thumbnails fill in continuously as they decrypt, instead of all appearing at once after a pause
• Clearing the cache rebuilds thumbnails immediately instead of waiting for a full reload

Shipped in v2.1.0

The stability release, everything v2.0.0 promised, now working smoothly end to end. Album sharing is live across Android and Drive web, every album is cloud-native, trash lives in the app, and the editor, search and viewer all got a polish pass. GitHub Releases.

• Album sharing, end to end: invite people by email straight from an album, pick viewer or editor (changeable later, even on pending invites), see who has access, remove members or stop sharing anytime, recipients see every photo on Android and Drive web alike
• Shared with you: albums others share appear in the Shared tab, open them, browse full-quality photos and videos, save a whole album into your own library, or leave it
• Every album is a cloud album now: creating one from the gallery, the viewer or the Albums tab always creates it on Proton Drive, picks a cover automatically, and is ready to share immediately
• Trash, in the app: deleted cloud photos show up with thumbnails, restore them or delete forever without opening the web
• Folder mirroring: choose device folders that keep a matching Drive album in sync while backing up
• In-app updates: the app spots new releases and installs them with one tap
• Open with Photos: images and videos opened from other apps land in the viewer, editing one tap away
• Offline albums: albums you've opened stay browsable without a connection, with clearer messages when the network drops
• Faster everywhere: app start is precompiled, and thumbnails load ahead of your scrolling and keep up while you fling
• Editor polish: cropping applies live as you drag, no extra confirm step, and the crop frame follows rotations and flips
• Stronger privacy: location is stripped from videos too when metadata stripping is on, timestamps can be kept out of the cloud, and the hidden vault re-asks for your screen lock when you return
• Smarter search: instant accent-insensitive filtering, jump to any month, redesigned calendar chips
• Viewer refinements: double-tap to zoom, swipe past a zoomed photo's edge to turn the page, controls stay hidden while you browse, and the light theme gets a light viewer
• Multi-select upgrades: select a whole day with one tap; mixed selections read "12 photos, 2 videos"
• TalkBack descriptions across the main screens; backup waits when the battery is low; photos keep one consistent order everywhere and the light theme is readable end to end

Shipped

Shipped in v2.0.0

The first stable release. New name, new first-launch wizard, a private Cloud Photos widget mode, optional Delete after backup, a redesigned settings surface, and a full sandbox hardening pass. GitHub Releases.

• Renamed from "Proton" Photos to Photos for Proton across the app and the website (the new structure makes the third-party relationship clearer)
• First-launch wizard (about + attribution, backup mode, folder picker, metadata privacy, app lock, appearance + language, photo access, notifications, manage media, committed atomically when you finish)
• Cloud Photos widget mode (pick photos from your encrypted cloud cache to show on the home screen; the source bytes never enter the device photo index, so other apps and the system picker can't see them)
• Delete after backup (optional toggle that removes the device copy as soon as the cloud upload succeeds, with a system trash consent notification that drains the next time you unlock the phone)
• Settings redesign (every section collapses with an animated chevron, Appearance and Language combined on one page, descriptions under every toggle, Recently Deleted moved under Storage)
• Sandbox hardening (cleartext blocked everywhere, only the system trust store is trusted so a user-added certificate authority cannot intercept, TLS pin extended to CDN traffic, all log calls stripped in release, app state cannot migrate via Google Drive auto-backup or device transfer)
• Unified error popup (copyable, expandable, with sensitive details redacted) replaces a half-dozen ad-hoc snackbars and toasts across the app
• Multi-select with mixed device + cloud selections is now guarded with a clear hint instead of silently dropping items from Add to album
• Cloud album rename (parity with local albums; the dialog and the underlying Drive call were both wired end-to-end)
• Language picker applies live so the wizard re-themes on every pick
• All six locales (en, hu, de, es, fr, it) refreshed with the new strings; orphan string keys removed
• Video editor rebuilt across trim, crop, rotate, and the music-overlay layer (live preview matches the saved output frame for frame; rotation uses orientation metadata so 90 / 180 / 270 degree edits keep aspect ratio perfectly)
• Music overlay with separate gain sliders for the original audio and any added track, real sample-by-sample PCM mixing under the hood
• HDR preserved on trim, rotate, and audio-only edits via stream-copy (only the crop path applies a full re-encode because the rect has to be baked in)
• Video editor save flow no longer double-transcodes; cloud edits upload as a single new revision and surface in the gallery immediately

Shipped in v1.3.2-beta

Patch release focused on backup reliability, fresh photos start uploading within seconds, three at a time, with cleaner notifications and a friendlier Sync settings screen.

• Reliable background backup (photos and videos start uploading within seconds of capture, even after you swipe the app from recents, also kicks when you unlock the phone)
• Three-photo parallel uploads (large backlogs catch up roughly 3× faster than serial)
• Exclude folders from "Back up everything" (new screen in Sync settings, pick Screenshots, Movies, WhatsApp Status, anything you don't want on Drive; already-uploaded items stay on Drive)
• Redesigned Sync settings (two clear sections, what gets backed up, and when it happens, the interval picker is gone, "Auto-sync" renamed to "Continuous backup")
• Backup keeps going after reboot (no need to open the app to re-arm it)
• Cleaner upload notifications (no more "0 of 0 uploaded" flicker, no more two overlapping notifications during a batch)
• Editor Adjust labels translated to Hungarian, German, Spanish, French, Italian (brightness, exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation, tone, temperature were stuck in English)
• Localized background-sync, calendar and search labels in all 6 languages
• More reliable long upload runs (cancels cleanly when you stop, no more rare crashes after large batches)

Shipped

Shipped in v1.3.1-beta

Patch release with the Calendar view, a modernised image editor, smarter pinch-to-zoom, and a friendlier search start page.

• Redesigned image editor (more modern look, more adjustments, exposure, highlights, shadows, tone, temperature alongside brightness, contrast and saturation; slimmer slider; clearer pill-based navigation)
• Better pinch-to-zoom on the photos page (grouping by day, month or year depending on the zoom; multiple level changes within one continuous gesture)
• Search screen update (recent photos at the top, an "On this day" carousel, and a "Jump to month" grid so you can dive into a past month with one tap)
